I’ve always wondered about the process the mid-century illustrator used to create an illustration for a magazine short story. Did he read the story first and then decide what to illustrate, or was he given specific guidelines? “Paint a dark haired girl with 3 sisters glamming her up”. Whatever the process, this illustration by Coby Whitmore is another attention getter. For some reason, I only scanned the illustration for this story, and not the remainder of the pages. I did, however, include the first page of the story so you can get the feel for the storyline. The short story was written by Millie McWhirter and appeared in the June issue of Today’s Woman. Take a quick read a you will quickly conclude that the 1952 Today’s woman is very different from today’s.
