1950’s Coffee Ads


This vintage-perfect 1950s woman is taking a sip of coffee. She is advertising a product called Pream, a coffee creamer that didn’t need refrigeration. This cream substitute was introduced in 1952. It was a predecessor to Carnation’s coffee Mate which was not introduced until 1961.

Here’s a smiling housewife appearing on the screen from a 70 year old ad for Edwards coffee. It was a popular brand sold at Safeway when it appeared in the February 1952 edition of Family Circle. The coffee came in a vacuum-packed can for the regular grind or a jar for the instant kind.

Instant coffee was popular in the 1950s. This smiling woman is drinking a cup of Nescafe instant coffee. It appeared in the January 1954 edition of Every Woman’s magazine.

So far we’ve seen coffee ads who catered to housewives. This ad shows a working woman. Secretaries were popular jobs for women living in the 1950s and 1960s. The sleek-looking secretary sitting in front of a typewriter is putting a sugar substitute in her coffee. She is advertising Sucaryl, a zero calorie sweetener which was eventually banned.

Here’s another fun ad showing a 1950s women drinking coffee. However, this pin-up style illustration of a woman taking a sip is not for coffee, but for bras. Specifically, it is advertising the popular mid-century intimate apparel brand of Formfit.

This charming drawing is from another sugar substitute advertised in the mid-century. This one is for a product named Sweeta. It was not sold in grocery stores, but in drug stores. Like the Sucaryl ad above, this product was also banned because it was tied to cancer.

Want fifties kitsch? Here you go. This 1950s woman is advertising Chase & Sanborn instant coffee. The image was found in an ad in the mid-century household magazine named Better Living. The year? 1954.

Our final favorite mid-century coffee ad is this pair of smiling coffee cups. They are actually not advertising coffee, but tea. The image was part of a Tender Leaf tea ad from 1952. This one is especially delightful to me because I have the smiling female tea cup in my cupboard. I found it in an antique store several years ago.
