1959 – Montgomery Clift

The mid-century actor and the filming of Suddenly Last Summer

Heartthrob movie star Montgomery Clift was the subject of the monthly Jon Whitcomb celebrity feature article for the November 1959 edition of Cosmopolitan. Whitcomb was a mid-century celebrity who was not known for acting, but for drawing. His monthly Cosmo feature included both words and illustration of the selected star.

Montgomery Clift was making the movie “Suddenly Last Summer” and Whitcomb gave back scene details about Clift and his acting style. The article talks about his friendship with co-star Elizabeth Taylor and details the car accident which left Clift with the scar you see on his cheek. The article is available for download below.

My blog, MidCenturyPage.com is a result of a 20 year passion to scan the pages of these magazines and share them with anyone who wants to understand what mid-century women thought about, cared about, and worried about while living in the 1950's and 1960's
