This beauty article titled “Beauty–Man’s Eye View” from the Sept 1964 edition of Ladies Home Journal has some great mid-century photography. It is enjoyable as long as you don’t read the text. It is hard to stomach.
Beau or husband, he has the final say on what’s pretty, what’s really beautiful, that’s the You he likes to see.

The article describes 8 ways to please your man with your beauty.
Eight ways to seek (and win with our beauty tips) that all-important masculine approval.
- Smile
- If you wear glasses, pick the right frame
- Clean shiny hair that your man can run his hands through
- Gentle Hands
- Your voice. Practice by talking to yourself in the corner of an empty room
- Wear the right makeup
- A creamy complexion all the way down to There.
- Good legs.
Thank you very much beauty editor, but I’d rather follow the advice of my mid-century grandmother. When it came to men (and life in general), she had these simple words. Be yourself. Decide for yourself.
This is the same advice I will give to my own granddaughters, and anyone who will listen to me.
That’s the end of my soap box. Now enjoy these cool pictures and more ridiculous quotes from the article.

Caught by a camera bug or unaware over a cup of breakfast coffee, men unanimously approve of an instant smile

Clean, shiny hair, the kind you want to run your fingers through–that’s a man’s requisite for beautiful hair.

Wear eye makeup if you wear glasses and practice putting it on with long-handled water-color brushes which allow you to work, if need be, from behind the lenses.
