The tagline for this 1956 ad for IBM’s electric typewriter reads, “No, the IBM Electric can’t spell but it will give you the best-looking letters you ever saw.” I wonder if they ever imaged that 60 years later someone would be sharing this ad from a machine from that can indeed spell? For that matter, did anyone imagine that the concept of a letter would be all but obsolete?
