Say It with Flowers: Iconic Ads from the 1960s

Romance endures through time, demonstrated by vintage flower ads promoting love and connection via flowers, still relevant today.

Romance has not changed through the decades. How do you tell someone you love them? Say it with flowers. The ad you see comes from 1960. The full page ad was published in the December issue of McCalls magazine by the Society of American Florists.

Give her flowers – and she gets your message, for flowers speak the language of the heart

The ad provides a SAF logo and a note that says “Flowers and plants may be wired anywhere in the world”. The association still exists today. A quick search tells us that the organization was founded in the 1880’s. See the screenprint below.

Here’s another flower organization ad found in my collection of mid-century women’s magazines. It is for the Florists Telegraph Network. We know this today as FTD.

Here the ad is not for romance, but for Easter.

This Easter, give her an unforgettably happy day with lovely FLOWERS.

Like SAF, the Florists’ Telegraph Delivery Association is still used today to wire flowers. Here is a screenshot of the FTD website that tells a bit about their history. Note the iconic logo.

Like today, florists used technology to technology to facilitate the ordering and delivery process.
