In the 1950s, illustrators like Normal Rockwell were celebrities. This was before TV was mainstream, and people turned to magazines for entertainment. Normal Rockwell was known for illustrating life in America. Another popular illustrator was Jon Whitcomb. His work was recognizable to anyone who read 1950s women’s magazines. Known for his his romantic scenes, he illustrated for short stories, feature articles, and advertisements.

Jon Whitcomb was hired to produce illustrations for Community silverware. The above ad was found in the December 1951 issue of McCalls magazine.
Here is a similar ad from the February 1952 edition of Redbook.

. . . the world’s first favorite silverware. Why wait for “place settings” – Community dinner service for eight now only $55.75.

Here is one more Community Silverware ad by Jon Whitcomb that I found in my collection of mid-century women’s magazines.

According to the fine print found at the bottom of the ad, the Community brand was part of Oneida LTD.
