The mid-century party planner who thought of making a patchwork quilt out of bread may have been a bit too creative. I’m gonna file this one under cute to look at, but disgusting to eat.
The ad is for Best Foods Mayonnaise from the August 1959 edition of Ladies Home Journal.
Ladies, circle the table and have a bee. Set out Best Foods and start to spread on squares and triangles of brown and white bread. Different fillings make the pattern! Salami, sardines, eggs and cheese . . anchovies, salmon, whatever you please!

Quilters know the term Quilt Sandwich. It refers to the process of putting together a quilt. The bottom layer is the backing, the middle layer is the padding, and the top layer is the quilt top. You then use a needle and thread to sew it all together. As someone who quilts, I love that this is not a quilt sandwich, but a sandwich quilt.
