1965 – Synthetic Hair

This towering beehive from Sears Wigs would make Marge Simpson proud.

As the 1950’s progressed, so did fashions for your head. Suddenly, hats were no longer in style. By the mid-1960’s the need to wear a hat was replaced with the need to have a stylish hairdo. Meanwhile, scientists were producing man made fibers known today as synthetics. The technology was such that cottons, linens, and silks were replaced with polyester for the clothing industry, and natural hair was replaced with the man-made kind for wig producers. The wig industry gave women more options for style up top.

Sears took advantage of the trend and published this magazine in the 1960’s titled, “Sears Fashion Hairpieces and Wigs”. Here is a sampling of what they sold.

About Janet

I'm an American baby boomer with a strange hobby. I collect mid-century women's magazines. My blog, MidCenturyPage.com is a result of a 20 year passion to scan the pages of these magazines and share them with anyone who wants to understand what mid-century women thought about, cared about, and worried about while living in the 1950's and 1960's
