No mid-century woman’s magazine collection would be complete without a vintage Vogue. Most of the magazines in my collection catered to 1950s or 1960s middle class women. These women wore cotton. Vogue readers wore silk. Such was the case with this fashion article from the January 1957 edition. Here their focus was silk. More specifically, silks in a pretty floral print.

The article was titled, “Flowering Silks – Surprising Cannel Bay’s Wooded Beaches”.
First time around for this delicious idea: shorts and shirt-jackets of brilliantly flowered silk.
Vogue Magazine – January 1957

This Vogue fashion article set in the 1950s featured a feminine look. It combined floral print silk tops with floral print silk shorts. It is a pretty look that would get along well with 2025 spring fashions. Note the addition of hair bands and colorful beaded necklaces which they called, “Loops of beads and coiffures”. The looks were from BH Wragge and sold for $50.
A new system of casual dressing – much less casual, much more feminine.

A pretty floral dress was also featured. It too was made of silk. The casual dress was from David Crystal. It sold for $65.
The fashions were photographed in the US Virgin Island’s Caneel Bay’s resort. The editors of Vogue gave readers 18 pages of fashions photographed there.

According to the cover of the issue, the resort was linked to Laurance S Rockefeller who was passionate about conservation. All profits from the resort went to fund the island’s conservation efforts. The Rockefeller portion of the island was called The Plantation.
