1948 – Lemon Water Laxative

Have a glass of lemon water each morning

This mid-century man holding a glass while still in his PJ’s is trying to solve a problem. Shh. It’s a bit personal. He’s constipated. This graphic appeared in the February 1948 edition of Good Housekeeping magazine for Sunkist lemons. Their advice?

Squeeze a fresh lemon in a glass of water first thing in the morning.

The ad goes on to describe how to use lemon juice to help with colds.

You might wonder if this advice is still good. Well . . . as we have learned, science is not absolute. Some scientists say yes. Others say no. The best advice? Do what works for you. Give it a try. The extra water and fiber you get with a freshly squeezed lemon added to a glass of water will likely be good for you. Personally, I’m a fan of hot lemon juice as a healthy relief for a cold or sore throat.
