What did the mid-century working woman need to fulfil her lingerie wardrobe? According to this article that appeared in the January 1957 issue of Today’s Secretary magazine, a complete lingerie wardrobe consisted of the following:
- 4 bras (including 1 strapless)
- 3 girdles (including 1 panty)
- 6 pairs of panties
- 4 slips (either full or half)
- 1 full petticoat or crinoline
- 3 pairs of pajamas or night gowns
- 1 quilted or heavy robe
- 1 lightweight duster
Whew. That’s a lot of lingerie. The article warns the reader that fit is the most important thing to consider when buying a bra, slip, or girdle. It gives advice about how to buy the right girdle.
Make sure the garters are comfortably placed for you, and that there are no seams that bind or hit you uncomfortably.
On the other hand, have fun with the color choices. It suggests to buy something in the shade of your choice such as one of the new mint greens, rosy pinks, or icy blues.

I have to admit that even though I was a mid-century child, I was not aware of a crinoline. According to Wikipedia, the 20th century crinoline is similar to a petticoat. Picture the full under skirt worn by a female square dancer. Here is a link to the Wikipedia page.
