I am perhaps in the minority with this opinion, but I absolutely love this Coats & Clark ad from the September 1961 edition of McCalls magazine. The reason is two-fold. the color scheme is so sixties. And . . . I’m obsessed with knowing sewing. That is to say, I’ve been interested in making things all of my life, but it is just recently that I have begun the quest to learn as much as possible about sewing. Case in point. It’s important to use the right thread and needles for your project.

The Secret of sewing success: match your fabrics, needles, threads

This handy chart is a bit outdated. For example, machine needle sizing is different today and the fabrics listed are a bit limiting. However, it does a great job of making their point. Success requires the right combination of needles and thread.

About Janet

I'm an American baby boomer with a strange hobby. I collect mid-century women's magazines. My blog, MidCenturyPage.com is a result of a 20 year passion to scan the pages of these magazines and share them with anyone who wants to understand what mid-century women thought about, cared about, and worried about while living in the 1950's and 1960's
