1953 Hula Hoop Full Circle

A favorite toy then and now

Girls dressed in red gingham dresses and patent leather shoes playing hula hoops

A classic look and a classic toy. The pair of girls you see wearing red gingham check dresses, patent leather shoes, and white bobby socks pose for a photo shoot for the May 1953 edition of Today’s Woman magazine. Their toy of choice is the same as my toy of choice was when I was a child–a hula hoop. For that matter, a hula hoop was a favorite for my child and now it is a favorite of his child.

About Janet

I'm an American baby boomer with a strange hobby. I collect mid-century women's magazines. My blog, MidCenturyPage.com is a result of a 20 year passion to scan the pages of these magazines and share them with anyone who wants to understand what mid-century women thought about, cared about, and worried about while living in the 1950's and 1960's
